Information needed about tear down of Ventura Hotel

Built in 1896, the four-floor Ventura Hotel was a welcome new addition to a bustling town. It boasted shops on the ground floor, and ample rooms to accommodate many guests. It was located on the corner of Thirteenth and Winchester Avenue, where a Burger King now stands. By the 1920s a need for more modern rooms and amenities was seen and an 11-floor addition was added along the Winchester Avenue side. The hotel housed the military recruitment and many veterans went to get their physicals there. It was a stop on the Bus Lines route, with a nice little diner and various other businesses.

By the 1960s the Ventura was a dated and failing business. We are trying to determine exactly when it was torn down. We have articles narrowing it to between 1969 and 1972. It would be most welcome if you could help with a date or even a clue to help narrow the time frame. Please send an email to genealogy@thebookplace.org or use the contact form on this site.
